A modern facility with a distinguished history
The oldest continuously active gun club in the nation, Newport Rifle Club is a
safe, up-to-date facility offering a wide variety of shooting options, training and
competitions for bullseye pistol and rifle shooters, ranging from youngsters to
seniors, beginners to experienced.
Our club has a nine port 100-yard outdoor range on which safety baffles have
recently been installed. The 50-foot indoor range has eight ports and a HEPA
filtration system for air purity. NRC is open to members 24-7 using a key-card
system.
We offer a number of classes on safety, introduction to firearms, gun care and
marksmanship. There are special courses for women who want to learn to shoot
or shoot better. And NRA certified instructors are available for one-on-one
coaching.
We have pistol and rifle marksmanship competitions within the club and we
participate in several statewide competitions.
Newport Rifle Club Junior Team, which competes locally, regionally and
nationally, ranks among the most successful in the country. See "Junior Rifle
Team".
The club was founded in 1876 by W. Milton Farrow, said to be the best rifle
shot in America during the last quarter of the 19th Century. Winner of
numerous long-distance competitions at home and abroad, Farrow authored a
book, How I Became a Crack Shot and Hints to Beginners, which is still in print.
He started Farrow Arms Co. to manufacture guns of his design, considered to
be among the finest target rifles ever produced. See "NRC Founder" at left.
